In some areas, lionfish populations experienced a boom of up to 700% between 2004 and 2008. This rapid growth can have a massive impact on local ecosystems. One single lionfish on a reef has been known to reduce juvenile reef fish populations by 79%.

While many animals avoid them, some predators can eat lionfish. Moray eels, barracuda, and large groupers have been observed preying on them. Sharks are also believed to be able to eat lionfish without being harmed by the spines. In the Caribbean, officials at the Roatan Marine Park have even attempted to train sharks to eat lionfish to help control their numbers. For humans, the venom is a serious concern. The venom can cause pain, nausea, vomiting, and even temporary paralysis. In cases of severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, the venom can be fatal.

Understanding the spread of lionfish helps scientists study how invasive species move through the ocean. Many believe the invasion of the Western Atlantic began in the 1980s via the aquarium trade.
