Their chelicerae, or mouthparts, have lateral stridulating ridges and lack lateral condyles. They possess long, thin legs that are covered in macrosetae, which are large bristles. Linyphiidae is divided into several different groups. There are six subfamilies in total. The Linyphiinae, or sheetweb spiders, and the Erigoninae, or dwarf spiders, contain most of the known species. The Micronetinae subfamily is also a major part of the family. Linyphiinae members are generally larger and build "bowl and doily" webs or filmy domes. In contrast, Erigoninae members are usually tiny, often measuring 3 mm or less. These dwarf spiders build much smaller sheet webs and are very abundant in temperate regions.

One of the most fascinating behaviors in this family is ballooning. This is a method where spiders drift through the air to travel. Because they are so light, they can use the wind to move.
