It is named after the Limpopo River. This river forms the northern and western borders of the province. The province shares international borders with three different countries. To the west and northwest, it borders Botswana. To the north and northeast, it borders Zimbabwe. To the east, it borders Mozambique. Within South Africa, it sits near the provinces of Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and North West. The capital and largest city is Polokwane. The provincial legislature is located in Lebowakgomo.

The history of this region spans millions of years. Limpopo contains some of the earliest evidence of human activity in Southern Africa. The Makapansgat Caves near Mokopane are a globally important paleoanthropological site. Scientists have found fossil remains of Australopithecus africanus there. This was an early hominid species that lived 3 to 2.5 million years ago. These fossils help us understand early human evolution and tool use. Later, the Waterberg Biosphere became home to Late Stone Age hunter-gatherer societies. These people were the ancestors of the San. They left behind rock art and artifacts in places like the Echo Caves.

A major shift occurred during the Iron Age. This period saw the arrival of Bantu-speaking farming communities. These people moved southward and changed how the land was used. They shifted from hunting and gathering to settled agriculture. They practiced animal husbandry by raising cattle, sheep, and goats. They also practiced metallurgy, which is the science of working with metal. These communities were expert iron smelters and potters. They grew crops like millet and sorghum near important river systems. This era led to much more complex social structures and regional trade networks.

The most famous ancient society was the Mapungubwe Kingdom. This kingdom existed between 800 CE and 1290 CE. It was located at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers. Mapungubwe was the first known state-level society in Southern Africa. The kingdom had a rigid social hierarchy. The ruling elite lived on top of Mapungubwe Hill. This physically separated them from the commoners in the valley. The kingdom was a massive trading hub. They exported gold and ivory to the Indian Ocean coast.

Culture and tradition remain very important in Limpopo. The province is made up of three main ethnic groups: the Pedi, the Tsonga, and the Venda. Traditional leaders and chiefs still play a large role in politics. The Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders was established by an act in 2005. This group advises the government on custom, tradition, and culture. They also advise on development for rural communities. This connection to the past helps guide the future of the province.
