He lived in Wei and then in Chu. He died in the city of Shouchun.

Lian Po played a major role in the Battle of Changping. During this conflict, he commanded the Zhao forces against the Qin army. The Qin leader at the start of this battle was Wang He. Lian Po decided not to risk his soldiers in an open battle. Instead, he used a defensive strategy by building a series of forts. These forts were built along the Changping area to stop the invaders. This method successfully created a stalemate against the Qin forces.

However, the political situation in Zhao changed the course of the war. King Xiaocheng of Zhao became dissatisfied with Lian Po's cautious strategy. Many courtiers influenced the King, and most had been bribed by Qin spies. Because of this, the King decided to replace Lian Po with Zhao Kuo. Zhao Kuo was the son of another famous general named Zhao She. Unlike Lian Po, Zhao Kuo chose to discard the defensive strategy. He decided to attack the Qin army with full strength and great recklessness.

This change in leadership led to a massive disaster for the Zhao state. The Qin army replaced their leader, Wang He, with the famed General Bai Qi. Bai Qi used the news of the command change to set a trap. Zhao Kuo fell into this trap and was killed in the fighting. The battle resulted in the utter destruction of the Zhao army. Under the orders of the Qin commander, 400,000 Zhao soldiers were executed.

Lian Po eventually returned to command the Zhao army after the disaster. He was tasked with stopping an invasion from the Yan state. He successfully defeated the Yan army during this period. Despite this victory, he faced problems with his own government in later years. He felt distrusted by the King of Zhao. He also disagreed with the tyrant methods of leadership used by King Daoxiang. Because of these disagreements, Lian Po decided to leave his home state.

Lian Po traveled to the state of Wei and later to the state of Chu. He eventually settled in Shouchun, which was the capital of Chu. He lived there as an honorable "guest" in the Chu state. He lived long enough to see the gradual demise of the Zhao country. In later culture, Lian Po is viewed as a very versatile leader. He was skilled in both instinctive warfare and careful strategy. He could act as a vanguard in offense or a counter-siege expert in defense. His legacy remains a significant part of Chinese historical study.
