Lian Po was a famous general from the Zhao state. He lived during the Warring States period in China. This was a time of many different lands fighting for power. Lian Po is remembered as one of the four greatest generals of his era. He was known for being very good at many kinds of war. He could plan careful strategies or lead attacks with great skill. People in later stories often called him a very well-rounded leader.

In his early years, Lian Po won many battles. He fought successfully against the Qi and Wei states. He did not always get along with everyone in the Zhao government. For example, he disliked a minister named Lin Xiangru. Lin Xiangru was very smart and rose to power quickly. To avoid trouble, Lin Xiangru would often step out of the way of Lian Po's carriage. This made Lian Po feel very ashamed of his own behavior.

Lian Po wanted to make things right with the minister. He carried sharp brambles on his bare shoulders to show he was sorry. This act was a very humble way to ask for forgiveness. Today, people use a special phrase for this in China. It means to offer a sincere apology and ask for punishment. After this event, Lian Po and Lin Xiangru became good friends.

Lian Po also fought in the big Battle of Changping. He fought against the Qin army and their leader, Wang He. Lian Po chose not to fight in an open battle right away. Instead, he built many forts to stop the invaders. His plan worked well to keep the enemy from moving. However, the King of Zhao did not like this careful way of fighting. The King replaced Lian Po with a man named Zhao Kuo.

Zhao Kuo was the son of a general named Zhao She. Unlike Lian Po, Zhao Kuo attacked the enemy with full strength. This was a mistake because the Qin general, Bai Qi, set a trap. The battle ended in a disaster for the Zhao state. Many soldiers were lost, and 400,000 Zhao soldiers were executed. Later in life, Lian Po left Zhao because he did not like the King's ways. He lived in Wei and then in Chu. He died in the city of Shouchun.

Lian Po was a prominent general of the Zhao state. He lived during the Warring States period of Chinese history. This was a time when many different states fought for power. Lian Po is remembered as one of the Four Greatest Generals of the Late Warring States period. He is ranked alongside other famous leaders like Bai Qi, Wang Jian, and Li Mu. His military career was marked by many successful battles and high levels of fame.

In his early years, Lian Po proved his skill in several major conflicts. He won many victories in wars against the Qi state and the Wei state. These wins helped him build a very successful reputation in his home state of Zhao. However, he did not always get along with the people in the Zhao government. He specifically disliked a minister named Lin Xiangru. Lin Xiangru had risen to power very quickly due to his genius. This rapid rise caused tension between the general and the minister.

Lin Xiangru took several steps to avoid conflict with the powerful general. In one famous incident, the minister actually stepped away from Lian Po's carriage. He did this to avoid blocking the path of the great general. This behavior caused Lian Po to feel a deep sense of shame and embarrassment. To show his regret, Lian Po performed a very humble act. He carried sharp brambles on his bare shoulders to ask for forgiveness. This event created a famous Chinese phrase called a chengyu. The phrase "Carrying Thorned Grass and Pleading Guilt" means to offer a humble apology. It describes requesting punishment to show how sorry a person truly is. After this, the two men became good friends.

Lian Po played a major role in the Battle of Changping. During this conflict, he commanded the Zhao forces against the Qin army. The Qin leader at the start of this battle was Wang He. Lian Po decided not to risk his soldiers in an open battle. Instead, he used a defensive strategy by building a series of forts. These forts were built along the Changping area to stop the invaders. This method successfully created a stalemate against the Qin forces.

However, the political situation in Zhao changed the course of the war. King Xiaocheng of Zhao became dissatisfied with Lian Po's cautious strategy. Many courtiers influenced the King, and most had been bribed by Qin spies. Because of this, the King decided to replace Lian Po with Zhao Kuo. Zhao Kuo was the son of another famous general named Zhao She. Unlike Lian Po, Zhao Kuo chose to discard the defensive strategy. He decided to attack the Qin army with full strength and great recklessness.

This change in leadership led to a massive disaster for the Zhao state. The Qin army replaced their leader, Wang He, with the famed General Bai Qi. Bai Qi used the news of the command change to set a trap. Zhao Kuo fell into this trap and was killed in the fighting. The battle resulted in the utter destruction of the Zhao army. Under the orders of the Qin commander, 400,000 Zhao soldiers were executed.

Lian Po eventually returned to command the Zhao army after the disaster. He was tasked with stopping an invasion from the Yan state. He successfully defeated the Yan army during this period. Despite this victory, he faced problems with his own government in later years. He felt distrusted by the King of Zhao. He also disagreed with the tyrant methods of leadership used by King Daoxiang. Because of these disagreements, Lian Po decided to leave his home state.

Lian Po traveled to the state of Wei and later to the state of Chu. He eventually settled in Shouchun, which was the capital of Chu. He lived there as an honorable "guest" in the Chu state. He lived long enough to see the gradual demise of the Zhao country. In later culture, Lian Po is viewed as a very versatile leader. He was skilled in both instinctive warfare and careful strategy. He could act as a vanguard in offense or a counter-siege expert in defense. His legacy remains a significant part of Chinese historical study.
