To determine if word combinations are truly special, scientists use a t-score analysis. This calculation looks at word frequency within a corpus to see if a combination is unusually common. In this case, the two words together create a meaning that is not predictable from the individual words alone.

Metaphor also serves as a major organizational principle for the lexis. According to the NOA theory, metaphoric sorting helps simplify language storage and prevents mental overload.
