Howard's life began in London, England. He was born Leslie Howard Steiner in 1893. His father was from Hungary and his mother was British. During the First World War, he served in the British Army. He started as a bank clerk before enlisting as a private. Later, he became a subaltern in a cavalry unit. In 1920, he officially changed his last name to Howard. 
He worked with many famous people in Hollywood. He co-starred with Bette Davis in The Petrified Forest. He also worked with Humphrey Bogart in that same film. This role helped start Bogart's famous movie career. Howard was also part of a company called Minerva Films. This company made movies written by A. A. Milne. He was a very busy man in the film world. 
During the Second World War, Howard wanted to help his country. He made films to support the Allied side. These films helped people understand the war effort. Sadly, he died in 1943 while traveling on a plane. The plane was BOAC Flight 777. It was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean.
