Leonid Utesov was a legendary Soviet entertainer who mastered the art of estrada. Estrada is a style of popular entertainment that combines music, acting, and comedy.
Utesov's performances were complex and highly structured musical shows. He did not simply stand and sing a single type of song. Instead, he created a hybrid style that blended many different musical genres. He built a band of the finest musicians in Leningrad to support his vision. His shows often featured a mix of American jazz and Russian folk music. He also incorporated Argentine tango and French chanson into his repertoire.
During the 1930s, his musical group reached a new level of organization. He called his ensemble "Thea-Jazz," which was a portmanteau of the words "theatrical" and "jazz." This group performed at several famous venues in Leningrad. They played at the Marble Hall of the Kirov Palace of Culture. They also performed at the Leningrad Maly Opera theatre and the Leningrad Music Hall. His band provided a regular, high-quality musical experience for large audiences. This era helped establish him as a leader of the "red jazz age."
