The name "Leipzig" has a complex history. Many people believe it comes from the Slavic word "lipa." This word means linden tree. This would make the city the "City of Linden Trees." This is why the city is often called Lindenstadt. However, some researchers disagree with this theory. They point to the name "Libzi" from the year 1015. This oldest written form is difficult to connect to "lipa." Some suggest the root might be a pre-Slavic word related to flowing water. This would match the many streams in the city center.
