Many different researchers have contributed to our knowledge of this genus over the decades. Woodward once tried to rename the genus Leedsia, but this is now considered an invalid name. Fossils have been uncovered in many locations, including England, France, Germany, and Chile. In 1999, a second species named Leedsichthys notocetes was proposed based on Chilean finds. However, later research by Jeff Liston showed that the differences were just caused by erosion. This meant the second species was actually the same as Leedsichthys problematicus. Even in Germany, amateur paleontologists once found remains that they mistakenly thought belonged to a different dinosaur.
Recent excavations have provided even more detail about these ancient giants. In 2001, students in England found a major specimen nicknamed "Ariston." 
Leedsichthys holds a significant place in the study of evolutionary biology. Some scientists believe pachycormids might represent an early branch of Teleostei. Teleostei is the group that includes most modern bony fishes. If this is true, Leedsichthys would be the largest known teleost fish in history. By studying these fossils, researchers can better understand the diversity of the Mesozoic marine ecosystem. The existence of such a large filter-feeder shows how much plankton must have been available in ancient seas. It connects our understanding of ancient ocean food webs to the biological systems we see today.
