Approximately 70 percent of all shoes manufactured in Mexico come from this region. Workers produce shoes, boots, belts, and jackets for both national and international markets. This industry was so central to life that it earned residents the nickname "panzaverde," or "green belly." This name came from the green staining that occurred on workers' bodies during leather treatment. Beyond leather, the city hosts diverse industrial sectors. These include chemicals, plastics, polymers, and transportation. The nearby municipality of Silao also hosts a General Motors automotive plant.

The geography of the region includes a variety of climate characteristics. León generally experiences a humid subtropical climate, classified as Cwa under the Köppen system. This climate is characterized by summer rainfall. The area borders a semi-arid climate, leading to some scientific debate over its exact classification. Annual precipitation mainly occurs from late May through October. These rains often arrive as evening thunderstorms. The average annual temperature varies by season. May is typically the warmest month. January is usually the coolest. Snowfall is extremely rare, with the last recorded instance occurring in 1997.

There are ten distinct archaeological zones in the surrounding area. Many of these sites are linked to the Chupícuaro culture. Later, the region felt the influence of the Teotihuacan and Toltec civilizations. In the 13th century, Chichimeca groups migrated from the area of modern-day San Luis Potosí. They occupied the land through the Colonial period. Spanish arrival began in 1530 with Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán. However, the formal village of León was founded by Juan Bautista de Orozco on January 20, 1576. By 1580, the settlement held the rank of "alcadía mayor," giving it governing authority over much surrounding land.

The city has survived many periods of conflict and transformation. During the Mexican War of Independence, the town changed hands between independence forces and royalists. In 1863, the French occupied León during the French Intervention. Emperor Maximillian visited the city in 1864. His visit included a celebration with fireworks and a hot air balloon exhibition. The city also experienced internal political struggles during La Reforma. Between 1858 and 1860, the city changed hands between Liberal and Conservative forces. In 1946, a protest against contested elections led to a tragic event in the municipal plaza. This location is now remembered as the "Plaza of the Martyrs."
