People work to keep us safe.
People work to follow rules.

Law enforcement means following the rules of a society.
This work is very old. In ancient Egypt, people called Medjay helped keep order. In ancient Rome, groups called vigiles served. These workers were often soldiers or slaves. They also worked as firefighters and guards.
In the past, many people helped catch criminals. In England, groups of families watched over each other. Later, the London Bow Street Runners formed in 1749. In 1829, Robert Peel made the Metropolitan Police. This was a very important step for modern police.
In the United States, the first state police was the United States Marshals Service. It started in 1789. Today, police use new tools. They use police cars and radios. They also use body cameras to record what happens.

Law enforcement is how societies keep order and follow rules.
There are many ways these groups operate today. Most law enforcement is done by a police force. These are usually run by regular citizens rather than the military. However, some places have special groups called gendarmerie or internal troops. Agencies usually only work in one specific area, called a jurisdiction. These areas can be at the national, regional, or municipal level. Some groups are very specialized. For example, the DEA in the United States focuses on drugs.
People have been enforcing laws since ancient times. In ancient Egypt, people known as Medjay helped keep order. The Roman Empire had groups called vigiles. In ancient China, there were officials called prefects. In Babylonia, they had people called paqūdus. These early workers were often soldiers, slaves, or guards. They did many jobs, like being firefighters or bodyguards. In the Middle Ages, groups like the shurta provided protection and even collected waste.
Modern police forces began to form in Europe a long time ago. The first statutory police force was the High Constables of Edinburgh in 1611. In 1667, the Paris lieutenant général de police was organized. In England, the London Bow Street Runners started in 1749. Later, in 1829, Robert Peel formed the Metropolitan Police. In the United States, the Philadelphia Police Department was the first municipal department. The United States Marshals Service started in 1789 as the first federal agency.
Today, technology helps law enforcement do their jobs much better. Officers use police cars, radios, and even airplanes. Many now wear body cameras to record what happens. Most countries in the world have some kind of police force. To help different countries work together, Interpol was formed in 1923.
Law enforcement is the organized activity of government members or social institutions. These groups work to enforce laws by investigating, deterring, or punishing rule violations. They also focus on rehabilitating people who break societal norms. This activity is a core part of the criminal justice system. This system includes three main components: police, courts, and corrections. These three branches may work independently. However, they often work collectively through record sharing and cooperation.
Beyond punishment, law enforcement aims to protect public life and property. Officers also work to keep the peace within a society. While many focus on criminal acts, some organizations manage non-criminal violations. They might use less severe consequences, such as probation, to encourage better behavior. Modern legal codes use specific terms for these workers. A law enforcement officer or peace officer is anyone given police power by a state. Traditionally, anyone sworn or badged to make arrests falls under this umbrella.
History shows that law enforcement has existed since ancient times. Different civilizations developed their own unique methods. In ancient Egypt, the Medjay served in this role. The Roman Empire utilized groups called vigiles. Ancient China used prefects, while Babylonia employed paqūdus. In the Inca Empire, officials were known as curaca. These early enforcers were often soldiers, slaves, or officers for judges. They frequently held many roles at once. They served as firefighters, watchmen, city guards, or even slave catchers.
During the Middle Ages, specialized forces emerged to provide various services. The Santa Hermandades and the shurta provided protection and enforcement. Some groups, like the Maréchaussée, even handled customs enforcement and waste collection. In England, a complex system used tithings, which were groups of ten families. These groups were responsible for apprehending criminals. Ten tithings formed a "hundred," overseen by a reeve. These were part of larger administrative divisions called shires. Shires were then overseen by shire-reeves.
Modern police organizations began to take shape in Europe during the early modern period. The first statutory police force was the High Constables of Edinburgh in 1611. Later, in 1667, the Paris lieutenant général de police was organized. In England, enforcement was once the job of private citizens and thief-takers. This changed in 1749 with the London Bow Street Runners. In 1829, Robert Peel merged the Bow Street Runners and the Thames River Police. This merger created the Metropolitan Police.
Law enforcement also spread to the Americas through European colonization. The New York Sheriff's Office and the Essex County Sheriff's Department formed in the 1660s. In the United States, the Philadelphia Police Department became the first municipal department in 1789. That same year, the United States Marshals Service became the first federal agency. In Canada, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was established in 1729. The Dominion Police became Canada's first national agency in 1868.
Today, agencies operate within specific areas called jurisdictions. These are organized at national, regional, and municipal levels. In the United States, agencies exist at federal, state, and local levels. Some agencies have very specific focuses. For example, the DEA focuses on narcotics, while the ATF focuses on weapon regulation. Some groups are even private, such as railroad police. Technology has transformed how these agencies function. Officers now use police cars, radio systems, and aviation. Many also use police body cameras to record their work.
Global cooperation is essential for modern law enforcement. Because crime can cross borders, countries must work together. The International Criminal Police Organization, known as Interpol, was formed in September 1923. This helps different nations coordinate their efforts. Law enforcement agencies can also change over time. A governing body may dissolve or consolidate an agency. This might happen to improve efficiency or because of criminal justice reform. These changes help societies adapt to new needs and challenges.
