In 1885, Laura married Almanzo Wilder in De Smet, South Dakota. 
Seeking a change, the Wilders moved to Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894. 
Wilder's professional writing career began in earnest in 1911. She became a columnist and editor for the "Missouri Ruralist." 
Wilder's work connects personal history to the broader story of American expansion. Her books are not just stories, but historical records of the pioneer experience.
