Lata Mangeshkar was one of the most famous singers from the Indian subcontinent.

Lata was very disciplined and took her work very seriously. She always recorded her songs while standing barefoot. She did this because she viewed the recording studio as a temple. She was also a perfectionist in her singing. This meant she would not listen to her own songs after they were released. She said she only wanted to find mistakes in her own voice. To make sure her words sounded perfect, she even hired a teacher to help her with Urdu.
Music was in her family from the very beginning. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical singer and a theatre actor. He gave Lata her very first music lessons. When she was only five years old, she started acting in musical plays.
Lata's career had many important moments and big successes. In 1942, she was only thirteen when her father passed away. A friend named Master Vinayak helped her start her career as a singer. Her first big hit was the song "Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora" in 1948. She also became the first Indian playback singer to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1974. She even appeared in the Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist in history. Her sister Asha Bhosle later took that record.
Because of her talent, Lata received many high honors. In 1989, the Indian government gave her the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. In 2001, she received the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian honor.
Lata Mangeshkar was an incredibly influential Indian playback singer and music composer.
Music was a deeply personal and disciplined practice for Mangeshkar. She viewed the recording studio as a sacred space, much like a temple. To show this respect, she always recorded her songs while standing barefoot. She was also a dedicated perfectionist regarding her vocal technique. Mangeshkar famously refused to listen to her own songs after they were released to the public. She explained that she did this to avoid hearing and focusing on her own mistakes. This drive for perfection extended to her language skills as well.
Her musical journey began with a strong family foundation in Indore. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical singer and a theatre actor. He provided her very first music lessons. Her mother, Yesubai, was also a reputed musician from the Devadasi community.

Tragedy and hard work shaped her early professional life. When she was thirteen in 1942, her father died of heart disease. A family friend, Master Vinayak, helped her begin her career as a singer and actress. Early on, she found acting uncomfortable because of the bright lights and the pressure of people giving orders. She eventually moved to Mumbai in 1945 to focus on her music. A major turning point occurred in 1947. After a critique regarding her accent, she hired a Maulvi to teach her the nuances of the Urdu language. This helped her master the phonetic perfection required for Urdu Ghazals.
Her rise to stardom changed the status of singers in India. In 1949, her song "Aayega Aanewaala" from the movie *Mahal* became a massive hit. Before this moment, playback singers were often treated like invisible stuntmen. They were rarely credited or recognized by the public. This specific song acted as a catalyst, making Mangeshkar a star in her own right. It opened doors for other playback singers to receive the recognition they deserved.
Mangeshkar also fought for the professional respect of her peers. In 1958, she famously protested the Filmfare Awards. She refused to perform until the organizers created a specific category for playback singers. This protest was successful, and the category was introduced in 1959. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she collaborated with many famous music directors. These included Naushad, who composed her song "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya," and Shankar–Jaikishan. Her versatility allowed her to sing raga-based songs and modern film tracks alike.
Her many achievements earned her the highest honors in India and abroad. In 1989, she received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award from the Government of India. In 2001, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian honor. She was only the second singer to ever receive this distinction.
