The Langkofel is a group of mountains.
These mountains form a big ring. The ring has a small space inside. It looks like a courtyard.
Long ago, this place was under the sea. It was a coral reef. The reef became these mountains.
The peaks are very tall. Some people hike on trails. Others go there to ski.
It is a grand place to visit.
The Langkofel Group is a large set of mountains.
The peaks form a shape like an arc. This arc is open to the northwest. Inside the arc is a small space. It looks like a courtyard. One small mountain sits inside this space. We call it the Langkofelkarspitze.
These mountains have a cool history. About 230 million years ago, this area was a sea. The mountains began as a coral reef. Hard rock formed on the outside of the reef. The inside rock was soft. It wore away over time. This left a ring of tall peaks.
The highest peak is called Langkofel. It is 3,181 meters tall. People visit this place to hike. In summer, a gondola lift carries people up the hills. In winter, people go there to ski. There are many ski areas at the foot of the mountains. Some people even ski in a big circle called the Sella Ronda.
The Langkofel Group is a huge set of mountains.

The mountains form a shape like a large arc. This arc is only open to the northwest. Inside this shape is a kind of inner courtyard. There is only one small mountain inside it. This small peak is called the Langkofelkarspitze. The peaks form a ring in a clockwise direction. This ring includes the Langkofel and the Plattkofel. Other peaks are the Fünffingerspitze and the Zahnkofel. The Grohmannspitze and Innerkoflerturm are also part of this ring.
These mountains have a very old story. They began 230 million years ago. At that time, this place was a shallow tropical sea. The mountains actually started as a coral reef. Hard limestone formed on the outside of the reef. The rock in the middle was brittle. This soft rock wore away after the mountains rose up. This left the ring of peaks we see today.
The highest point is the Langkofel peak. It stands 3,181 metres tall. Many people visit to stay in alpine huts. The Langkofel Hut sits at 2,256 metres. The Toni Demetz Hut is at 2,685 metres. The Plattkofel Hut is at 2,300 metres. Other huts include the Friedrich August and the Williams Hut.
Visitors do many things in this place. In summer, a gondola lift runs from Sellajoch. It goes up to the Langkofelscharte. People can hike trails to see the peaks. There is a rocky area called the "Rocky Town." It is known for its rich plants. In winter, people go there to ski. They visit areas like Col Rodella or Ciampinoi. Some skiers even do the Sella Ronda circuit.
The Langkofel Group is a significant massif located in the western Dolomites. This mountain range is a part of the Italian Alps. The group acts as a natural divider between two major areas. To the north lies the Gröden valley. To the south lies the Fassa valley. The group is bordered by other famous landmarks. The Sella massif sits to the east. The Rosengarten range is found to the west. Northwest of the mountains, you will find the Seiser Alm.

The summits of the Langkofel Group create a unique geological shape. The peaks form a large arc. This arc is open only toward the northwest. Inside this arc, the mountains create a space like an inner courtyard. There is only one small mountain located within this courtyard. It is called the Langkofelkarspitze. The main peaks form a ring. If you travel clockwise, the ring includes the Langkofel and the Langkofeleck. It continues to the Fünffingerspitze and the Grohmannspitze. The ring also contains the Innerkoflerturm, the Zahnkofel, and the Plattkofel.
Geology explains why the mountains look this way. The region began to form during the early Triassic period. This was about 230 million years ago. At that time, the area was a shallow tropical sea. The mountains actually started as a coral reef. Over time, hard limestone formed on the outside of the reef. However, the rock in the interior remained brittle. When the range was uplifted, the brittle interior eroded quickly. This erosion left behind the garland of mountains we see today.
The highest point in the entire group is the Langkofel. It reaches an elevation of 3,181 metres. The group contains many different named summits. These include the Grohmannspitze, also known as Sasso Levante. There is also the Innerkoflerturm and the Zahnkofel. Other notable peaks are the Langkofelkarspitze and the Plattkofel. The Fünffingerspitze is another distinct part of the range. Each peak contributes to the massive structure of the group.

Many alpine huts provide shelter for people visiting the mountains. The Langkofel Hut sits at 2,256 metres in the Langkofel Cirque. The Toni Demetz Hut is higher, at 2,685 metres. It is located in the Langkofel Col. The Plattkofel Hut sits at 2,300 metres. Other shelters include the Friedrich August Hut and the Sandro Pertini Hut. The Emilio Comici Hut sits at the foot of the Langkofel. There are also the Des Alpes, Williams, and Schutzhaus Sellajoch huts. These structures allow people to stay in the high altitudes.

Tourism is a major activity in the Langkofel Group. In the summer, visitors use a gondola lift. It runs from Sellajoch up to the Langkofelscharte. From that high point, hikers can reach the Toni Demetz refuge. Trails allow people to circle both the Langkofel and the Plattkofel. One specific route is the Oskar Schuster Steig. This is a klettersteig, or via ferrata, route. Between the Langkofel and the Sellajoch is the "Rocky Town." This area is known as the Steinernen Stadt. It is a region of rockslides with very rich flora.

Winter brings different activities to the foot of the massif. There are several ski areas in the region. These include Col Rodella on the Sellajoch. Other areas are Plan de Gralba, Ciampinoi, and Monte Pana. The Ciampinoi area features the Saslong world cup run. Skiers can also participate in the Sella Ronda. This is a famous circuit of the Sella Group. It uses ski pistes that run both clockwise and anticlockwise. The Langkofel Group remains a central part of this alpine landscape.
