Lancashire is a county in North West England.
The land has many different looks. The west has flat coastal plains. These areas are used for growing vegetables. The north-west coast is hilly. The east has high land. This area is called the Pennines.

Three main rivers flow through the county. They are the Lune, the Wyre, and the Ribble. All three rivers flow west into the sea. The highest point is Gragareth. It is 627 meters tall.
Lancashire has a long history. It was founded in the 12th century. Long ago, it was a poor area. This changed during the Industrial Revolution. Many towns grew fast. They made textiles, which are cloth goods. People also dug for coal in the ground. The city of Preston is the largest settlement.

The landscape of Lancashire has many different shapes. The west side has flat coastal plains called the Fylde and the West Lancashire coastal plain. These flat areas are used for growing many vegetable crops. In the north-west, the coast becomes hilly and beautiful. This area is part of the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape. The east side of the county is much higher and more rugged. It contains the West Pennine Moors and the Forest of Bowland.

Water plays a big role in the shape of the land. Three major rivers flow through the county from north to south. These rivers are the Lune, the Wyre, and the Ribble. Each of these rivers flows west until it reaches the Irish Sea. The Lune flows through the city of Lancaster. The Wyre flows across the Fylde and near Fleetwood. The Ribble is a large river that flows past Preston. Many smaller rivers also join the Ribble along its path. These waterways help shape the valleys and the coastal areas.
Lancashire has a very long and changing history. The county was founded in the 12th century. In the year 1086, much of this land was part of Yorkshire or Cheshire. For a long time, it was a relatively poor area. This changed during the Industrial Revolution when things moved very fast. The county began to industrialize with many new factories. People worked in many collieries to get coal from the ground. They also made many textiles, which are different kinds of cloth.
Today, the county is a mix of old traditions and new ways of living. You can see the history in the old towns and the way the land is used. Some areas are part of the North West Green Belt to keep them open.

The physical landscape of Lancashire is very diverse. The west side contains flat coastal plains. These are known as the West Lancashire coastal plain and the Fylde. These areas are largely rural and used for growing vegetable crops. Further north, the coast becomes hilly. This area is part of the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape. In the east, the land rises into upland areas. These include the West Pennine Moors and the Forest of Bowland.

Water is a vital part of the county's geography. Three major rivers flow from north to south through the land. These are the Lune, the Wyre, and the Ribble. All three rivers eventually flow west into the Irish Sea. The Lune rises in Cumbria and flows through Lancaster. The Wyre rises in Bowland and flows across the Fylde. The Ribble rises in North Yorkshire and flows past Clitheroe and Preston. Many other rivers, like the Calder and the Douglas, are tributaries of the Ribble. This means they are smaller rivers that flow into the larger Ribble river. The Irwell river also begins its journey in Lancashire.
The history of Lancashire involves many changes in borders and power. The county was officially founded in the 12th century. However, in the Domesday Book of 1086, much of this land was treated as part of Yorkshire or Cheshire. In 1351, it became a palatine. This meant it had a semi-independent judicial system, which is a way of managing laws. During the Roman era, the area belonged to the Brigantes tribe. Many towns, such as Lancaster and Ribchester, grew around Roman forts. After the Romans left in 410 AD, the northern parts likely belonged to the Brythonic kingdom of Rheged. Later, the area was split between the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia.
Lancashire underwent a massive transformation during the Industrial Revolution. Before this period, it was a comparatively poor backwater. As industry grew, the county rapidly industrialised. It became a major center for the manufacture of textiles, which are woven fabrics. The Lancashire coalfield was also heavily exploited. This led to the opening of many collieries, which are mines used to extract coal.
Local government structures have changed many times since the Victorian era. In 1889, the administrative county of Lancashire was created. This covered most of the area, but many large towns were managed separately. These were called county boroughs. These included places like Bolton, Burnley, and Wigan. In 1974, the Local Government Act 1972 reorganised everything. The south-east became part of Greater Manchester. The south-west became part of Merseyside. Some areas, like Widnes and Warrington, moved to Cheshire. In 1998, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen became unitary authorities. This means they have their own local government, though they remain part of the ceremonial county.
Today, the population is spread out in different ways. The north is less crowded than the south. The Fylde coast is a continuous built-up area. This includes Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, and Fleetwood. In the south-east, the area is more urbanised. This is especially true near the borders of Greater Manchester. To prevent towns from merging together, much of the south and centre is covered by the North West Green Belt.
