History shows that the lake has been a center of power and conflict. The Romans referred to the lake as lacus Pelsodis or Pelso. 
Tourism has transformed the region over the last century. In the late 19th century, landowners began building summer homes. This happened after the Phylloxera pest attacked their grape vines. Railways built in 1861 and 1909 helped tourism grow. By the 1960s and 1970s, government efforts made it a major destination. In July 1965, there were 700,000 overnight guests. These plants help with wave attenuation and nutrient sequestration. About fifty of Hungary's seventy-six native freshwater fish species live here. Scientists use high-resolution sequencing to study the "rare biosphere" of bacteria in the lake. 
Modern management focuses on protecting this environment. The Kis-Balaton Water Protection System is a major two-stage restoration measure. It includes a 150-square-kilometer reed-management zone. Commercial fishing has been banned since 2013 to help the ecosystem. Despite these efforts, challenges like cyanobacterial blooms still occur. These blooms are often triggered by climate-driven phosphorus release from sediments. Ongoing monitoring is essential to maintain the health of this vital Central European landmark.
