Lê Lợi was born on August 6, 1385, in Lam Giang village. He was the youngest of three sons in a noble family. His father, Lê Khoáng, was a wealthy landowner in Thanh Hóa province. While some older theories suggested Mường origins, recent genealogical studies confirm he was of Kinh ethnicity. The Lam Sơn region where he grew up was culturally diverse. It included Vietnamese, Mường, Hmong, and Tai villagers. This background likely shaped his understanding of the various groups in the region.

Lê Lợi's path to leadership was marked by early struggle and imprisonment. During the revolts of 1408 to 1414, he served as a member of the royal guard. He was arrested by Ming authorities and imprisoned from 1413 to 1415. After his release, he worked as a translator and tutor in Lạng Sơn. Eventually, a local feud led the Ming to pursue him back to his village. In February 1418, he officially launched his resistance movement. He declared himself Bình Định vương, or the Prince of Pacification.

His military strategy relied heavily on effective guerrilla tactics. He used small bands of irregular soldiers to ambush much larger Ming forces. To avoid being trapped, his troops constantly moved their camps. The Ming military was large, with 87,000 regulars stationed in 39 citadels. They also utilized advanced technology like the "magic handgun" or Chinese muskets. The Ming even captured Vietnamese experts to manufacture explosive weapons. Lê Lợi’s rebels countered this by building their own arsenals to copy Ming firearms.

The early years of the Lam Sơn revolt were extremely difficult. In 1421, a large Ming army attacked the Mã River valley. At the same time, a Laotian army of 30,000 men and 100 elephants arrived. Lê Lợi believed the Laotians were allies, but they actually joined the Ming. This resulted in a crushing defeat for the Vietnamese rebels by 1422. Lê Lợi was forced to sign a peace treaty in 1423. However, the Ming arrested the messenger, causing Lê Lợi to cancel the pact.

Lê Lợi rebuilt his strength by moving into the Thanh Hóa highlands. He worked closely with a Confucian scholar named Nguyễn Trãi. Together, they developed sophisticated military strategies and tactics. Following the advice of his comrade Nguyễn Chích, Lê Lợi marched south into Nghệ An. His forces successfully ambushed Ming troops in the Quỳ Châu district. He also recruited thousands of soldiers from ethnic minority groups in the highlands. By 1425, his movement had liberated much of the land from the south to the north.

The final stage of the conflict saw the total expulsion of Ming forces. By 1427, the resistance movement had successfully driven the Ming armies out of Vietnam. This victory restored the independence of the nation. Lê Lợi became the first emperor of the restored Dynasty of Đại Việt. His leadership established the Later Lê dynasty, which would shape the country's future. His ability to unite different ethnic groups and use irregular warfare remains a significant part of Vietnamese history.
