In 1862, he led a regiment of Hispanic volunteers at the Battle of Valverde. After the Confederate threat in New Mexico ended, Carson led operations against several tribes. These included the Navajo, Mescalero Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche. He led forces to destroy the food sources of these groups. Carson also oversaw the Long Walk of the Navajo. This was a period of great hardship for the Navajo people. 
Carson's life ended after a period of military service. He took command of Fort Garland in Colorado. However, poor health eventually forced him to retire from the army. He died of an aortic aneurysm on May 23, 1868. He is buried in Taos, New Mexico, next to his third wife, Josefa. 
Today, the way we remember Kit Carson has changed significantly. In the late nineteenth century, he was a symbol of the American frontier. This influence led to the building of statues and monuments.
