They built big forts to stay safe. One large fort was Nagardhan Fort.
The land was very rich. This helped the kingdom grow. It was a very busy place.
Over time, the land changed hands. It became part of a much larger land. Nagpur is still a famous place today.
Long ago, a ruler named Bakht Buland Shah built the city of Nagpur.
The Bhonsle leaders were strong soldiers. They made the kingdom very rich. They built big forts to stay safe. One was the Nagardhan Fort.
Things changed when the kingdom fought the British. After a war in 1818, Nagpur became part of the British Empire. This meant the British had much power. Later, the last ruler died in 1853. After that, the British took full control of the land. They made it the Nagpur Province.
Even as things changed, the area stayed important. A man named Tukaramji Mehere helped manage the land for a long time. He worked there until India became free in 1947.
The Kingdom of Nagpur was a powerful land in India. It existed during the 18th and 19th centuries. At first, it was part of the Gond Kingdom of Deogarh. A ruler named Bakht Buland Shah founded the city of Nagpur. He invited many workers and farmers to live there. His successor, Chand Sultan, moved the capital to the new city.
The Bhonsle family was a group of strong Maratha leaders. Raghoji I Bhonsle ruled from 1739 to 1755. He was a very bold leader. His armies traveled far to gain more land. He added places like Chanda and Sambalpur to his kingdom.
Life in the kingdom changed as time went on. For a long time, the government was fair and simple. The land was rich and the people grew many crops. But things became harder after the year 1803. Raghoji II lost some of his land to the British. Because of this, the government had to collect more money. They started charging many new taxes on the people. This made life difficult for the farmers. Some people even had to hide in village forts to stay safe.
Conflicts with the British Empire changed the kingdom's future. In 1817, a leader named Mudhoji II fought the British. He lost battles at Sitabuldi and near Nagpur city. After these wars, the British took much more land. In 1818, Nagpur became a princely state under British rule. A young ruler named Raghoji III took the throne later. He ruled until he died in 1853. Because he had no male heir, the British took full control. They turned the area into the Nagpur Province.
The history of Nagpur connects to many big changes in India. Even after the kings were gone, people still managed the land. A man named Tukaramji Mehere helped manage large areas for many years. He worked there until India became an independent nation in 1947. The old palaces and forts still stand today. They remind us of the many different rulers who lived there. From the Gond kings to the Bhonsle dynasty, the land has a very long story.
The Kingdom of Nagpur was a significant territory within the Maratha Empire. It existed during the 18th and 19th centuries. The kingdom was centered in the city of Nagpur. This city served as the capital for the state. Originally, the region was part of the Gond Kingdom of Deogarh. The history of the kingdom is a story of changing rulers and shifting power. It moved from Gond control to the Maratha Bhonsle dynasty. Later, it became part of the British Empire.

The kingdom began with the efforts of Bakht Buland Shah. He was the ruler of Deogarh. After visiting Delhi, he wanted to develop his own kingdom. He invited Hindu and Muslim artisans to settle in the plains. He also invited cultivators to work the land. This helped him found the city of Nagpur. His successor, Chand Sultan, continued this growth. Chand Sultan eventually moved the capital to Nagpur. However, succession struggles began after Chand Sultan died in 1739. These quarrels led to the Bhonsle family taking control.

The Bhonsle dynasty brought a period of military expansion. Raghoji I Bhonsle ruled from 1739 to 1755. He was a bold and decisive Maratha leader. He used the troubles of other states to increase his own power. His armies even invaded Bengal twice. He gained control of Cuttack through these actions. Between 1745 and 1755, he added Chanda, Chhattisgarh, and Sambalpur to his lands. The Bhonsle rulers were often military chiefs. They lived closely with their officers and maintained a simple lifestyle.
The military of Nagpur was quite sophisticated. The Bhonsles raised two infantry brigades. These troops had modern military training. They did not use European officers for guidance. The kingdom also used light cavalry mercenaries called Bargi. These Bargi soldiers were used during invasions of Bengal. The Bhonsles also employed Pindaris, who were groups of irregular soldiers. To strengthen their defenses, they used artillery. Following the example of the general Mahadaji Shinde, they raised French-trained artillery battalions. This showed they were integrating global military styles.
Life in the kingdom changed after the year 1803. Before this, the administration was generally good. The country was prosperous and the government was simple. However, Raghoji II lost a third of his territory to the British. This happened after he fought against the British at the battles of Assaye and Argaon. To replace the lost money, the government imposed new taxes. They also used a practice called rack-renting to collect revenue. This made life very hard for the local farmers. Many people had to hide in village forts to escape raids.
Conflict with the British Empire eventually ended the kingdom's independence. In 1817, Mudhoji II, also known as Appa Sahib, fought the British. He was defeated at the action at Sitabuldi. This led to more territories being ceded to the British. In 1818, Nagpur became a princely state of the British Empire. A young ruler named Raghoji III took the throne in 1818. He ruled until 1853. When he died without a male heir, the British used the doctrine of lapse. This allowed them to annex the entire kingdom into British India.
After the annexation, the area became the Nagpur Province. In 1861, it was part of the Central Provinces. During the revolt of 1857, there were attempts at an uprising. Local authorities and Madras troops stopped these disturbances. Even after the kings were gone, the land remained important. A man named Tukaramji Mehere managed large portions of land. He worked as a land administrator from Nagpur to Akola. He continued this work until India gained independence in 1947. The history of Nagpur shows how local dynasties transformed into a major part of a larger empire.
