Changing the name of the province was a big job. For a long time, it was called the North-West Frontier Province. This name was used starting in 1901 under the British Raj. People had many different ideas for a new name. Some wanted a name that honored the Pashtun people. Others wanted a name that felt fair to all groups. In April 2010, the name Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was finally chosen.

To the west, it shares an international border with Afghanistan. It is bordered by Balochistan to the south. To the east, it sits near Punjab, Islamabad Capital Territory, and Azad Kashmir. Gilgit-Baltistan lies to its north and northeast. This position makes it a vital link between different regions.

The geography of the area is defined by its mountain passes. The Khyber Pass is a major route through the Hindu Kush mountains.

Historically, this pass allowed merchants to travel for trade. It also allowed various empires to enter the region. Because of this proximity to the pass, the area saw frequent invasions. These movements shaped the history of the land for many centuries. The mountains have acted as both a gateway and a barrier.

Ancient history reveals that this province was the site of Gandhara. Gandhara was an ancient Indo-Aryan civilization.

The core of this civilization was the Peshawar and Swat valleys. It was a major center for Greco-Buddhism. This happened under the influence of the Indo-Greeks and later the Kushan Empire. The Kushan Empire reached its height between the 1st and 5th centuries CE. During this time, the capital was located at Peshawar.

The region was also a central location for spreading Buddhism to East Asia.

Religion in the region has changed many times over the ages. Originally, the area was a stronghold of Buddhism. It was also a center for Vedic and later forms of Hinduism. The Zoroastrian Avesta even describes the region as a beautiful place. However, Islam became the dominant religion after the 11th century. This shift occurred after the Ghaznavids conquered the Hindu Shahi kingdom. Today, the province is home to many different ethnic groups. These include the Pashtuns, Hindkowans, Saraikis, and Chitralis.

The political identity of the province has undergone many changes. In 1901, the British Raj created the North-West Frontier Province, or NWFP. This was done by splitting the northwestern districts from the Punjab Province. For over a hundred years, the name NWFP was used. In April 2010, the 18th Constitutional Amendment changed the name to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This new name means the "Khyber side of the land of the Pashtuns." The name was chosen to reflect the Pashtun culture and society.

This renaming process was not without intense controversy. Many people in the Hazara region strongly opposed the name change. They felt the name was too focused on one ethnic group. They preferred names like Gandhara or Sarhad to remain neutral. Protests broke out in places like Abbottabad. These protests included strikes and clashes with the police. Some argued that the name should include "Hazara" to represent Hindko speakers. This tension showed how deeply identity is tied to local politics.

Despite these debates, the province remains a vital part of Pakistan. It is the fourth largest province by land area. However, it is the third largest by population. The population of the province makes up 16.9% of the total country. Economically, it is also very significant. The province's share of Pakistan's GDP is about 10.5%. This is valued at over US$ 30 billion.
