People suffered during the Holodomor hunger. There was also heavy fighting during World War II. 
Many people in the region work in industry. They work in engineering and making chemicals. They also work in food processing and metallurgy. There is a big airplane plant for space systems here. The area has 19,000 square kilometres of farm land. People also work with a large gas field. Moving around is important for work and life. Many people use the rail network. 

Learning and religion are big parts of life too. There are 55 institutions for higher education. These schools help many thousands of students. The region has many different religious groups. There are 700 religious associations in the area. Some people are Orthodox, while others are Baptists. You can see beautiful buildings like the Annunciation Orthodox Cathedral.

History shows that the borders of this region have shifted often. During the Soviet administrative reforms from 1923 to 1929, the Kharkov Governorate was abolished. This left behind five okruhas, which are smaller administrative districts. These included Okhtyrka, Izium, Kupiansk, Sumy, and Kharkiv. The modern Kharkiv Oblast was officially established on 27 February 1932. Since then, several territories have moved to other provinces. Some land joined Donetsk Oblast in 1932. Other parts moved to Chernihiv, Poltava, and Sumy Oblasts between 1932 and 1939. The region also experienced the tragic Holodomor famine. 
Demographics reveal a diverse and large population. In 2021, the population was 2,598,961 people. More than half of these residents, about 1.42 million, live in Kharkiv city. 
The economy of Kharkiv Oblast is primarily industrial. It features strong sectors in engineering and metallurgy. The region also focuses on manufacturing, chemical production, and food processing. There is a major airplane plant for space controlling systems. Additionally, a large gas field exists within the oblast. Agriculture is also vital to the local economy. There are 19,000 square kilometers of arable land available for farming. This represents 5.9% of the total arable land in Ukraine. These industries work together to support the regional economy.
Transport networks are essential for moving people and goods. Rail transport accounts for 60% of the total transportation system. 
Education is a major pillar of the region's identity. There are 55 institutions of higher education in the oblast. These schools provide training for many thousands of students. In 2020, over 124,200 people were studying in higher education. There are also many vocational and technical institutions. In 2020, about 13,700 people studied in these professional programs. The education sector is a large employer in the region. In 2020, 104,900 people worked in the education sector. This represents 8.7% of all people employed in the regional economy.
Recent history has been marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In 2022, the Russian military launched an offensive in the region. This led to the occupation of about one third of the territory. This included areas like Izium and Kupiansk.
