Kenya's name itself has a deep connection to its geography. The country is named after Mount Kenya. In the 19th century, German explorer Johann Ludwig Krapf recorded the name. He was traveling with a Kamba caravan led by Chief Kivoi. Krapf asked about the mountain's name. Kivoi called it "Kĩ-Nyaa" or "Kĩlĩma- Kĩinyaa." This name likely described the black rock and white snow. The pattern reminded him of male ostrich feathers. The Agikuyu people call the mountain Kĩrĩma Kĩrĩnyaga. This means "the mountain with brightness." Eventually, the name of the mountain became the name for the whole country.
