Following the war, he helped form the first post-independence government. From 1972 to 1975, he served as the Law Minister. He also chaired the committee responsible for drafting the new constitution. At 35 years old, he was one of the youngest constitution drafters in the world. The resulting 1972 Constitution made Bangladesh the first constitutionally secular state in South Asia.
