History suggests Kabul is over 3,500 years old. It was mentioned during the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Many different empires have claimed the city over the centuries. These include the Seleucid, Greco-Bactrian, Mauryan, and Kushan empires.

During the Mauryan period, trade flourished through uniform weights and measures. Irrigation systems were also developed to increase crop harvests. The city became a center for learning, supporting Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

Later, the city became part of the Durrani Empire in 1747. It officially became the capital of Afghanistan in 1776 under Timur Shah Durrani.

The city also saw British occupation during the 19th-century Anglo-Afghan wars.

Kabul is home to many famous historical landmarks. Visitors can see the Arg, which is the presidential palace. Other notable sites include the gardens of Bagh-e Babur and Bagh-e Bala.

In the 20th century, Kabul experienced significant social changes. During the second half of the century, it was a stop on the "hippie trail" for Europeans. This earned the city the nickname "Paris of Central Asia." However, this period of tranquility ended with the Saur Revolution in 1978. The subsequent Soviet military intervention in 1979 led to a ten-year war.
