Balachander's excellence was recognized through numerous prestigious awards. He won nine National Film Awards and fourteen Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. He also earned thirteen Filmfare Awards and five Nandi Awards. In 1987, he was honored with the Padma Shri, which is India's fourth highest civilian award.
