Josiah Wedgwood was born on 12 July 1730. He grew up in a family of potters in Burslem. His father was a potter and his mother was Mary Stringer. When he was nearly twelve, he had a bad case of smallpox. This illness hurt his right knee very badly. He later had his leg amputated on 28 May 1768. Despite these hard times, he became a very successful leader. He built a large home called Etruria Hall in 1769.

Wedgwood's business became very large and famous.

He sold his pottery to many different people. Queen Charlotte bought his creamware in the 1760s. He named this line "Queen's Ware" to honor her. Simultaneously, he used emulation effects to market cheaper sets to the rest of society. He established showrooms in London, Bath, Liverpool, and Dublin to reach customers. His London showrooms became fashionable meeting places for the public. He also pioneered many modern sales techniques. These included direct mail, money-back guarantees, self-service, and illustrated catalogues. He even used "buy one get one free" offers and free delivery to drive sales.

Wedgwood’s personal life was marked by both scientific curiosity and physical hardship. He was born on 12 July 1730 to Thomas and Mary Wedgwood in Burslem. His mother instilled in him the value of knowledge based on reason and experiment. At age twelve, he suffered a severe bout of smallpox that damaged his right knee. This injury caused recurring pain and inflammation throughout his adult life. On 28 May 1768, his leg was eventually amputated. During periods of convalescence, he expanded his education by reading science and literature.

His professional connections helped shape the era of industrialization. While recovering from an injury, he met the chemist Joseph Priestley, who became a close friend. He also befriended Erasmus Darwin, the father of the naturalist Robert Darwin. Wedgwood’s business expanded significantly through his partnership with Thomas Bentley. In 1769, he moved his operations to the Etruria Works and lived in Etruria Hall.

His success was so great that Queen Charlotte purchased his creamware. He named this specific line "Queen's Ware" to capitalize on the royal association.

Wedgwood’s influence extended into social justice through his work as an abolitionist. He was a prominent fighter against the practice of slavery. To support this cause, he created the "Am I Not a Man and a Brother?" medallion.

This medallion was commissioned by Joseph Hooper, a founder of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. It used a specific design to raise awareness for the movement. His daughter, Sarah Wedgwood, was also a very active member of the anti-slavery movement. She helped found the Birmingham Ladies Society for the Relief of Negro Slaves.

Finally, Wedgwood’s legacy is deeply connected to the history of science. He was a member of the Darwin–Wedgwood family. His daughter, Susannah, married Robert Darwin and became the mother of Charles Darwin.
