Henry used Parker to manage batteries and perform technical repairs. Henry also used Parker as a subject for electrical demonstrations in the classroom. 
As a leader at the Smithsonian, Henry influenced many different fields. In 1848, he worked with Professor Stephen Alexander to study the sun. They used a thermopile to measure temperatures on the solar disk. They discovered that sunspots were cooler than the areas surrounding them. Henry also supported aeronautics through his connection to Thaddeus Lowe. Lowe was a balloonist who studied the jet stream and lighter-than-air gases. Henry endorsed Lowe's work to the federal government during the Civil War. This endorsement helped Lowe form the United States Army Balloon Corps. 
Henry was also a mentor to other famous scientists. Alexander Graham Bell visited Henry to discuss his theories on transmitting speech. Henry recognized that Bell had the "germ of a great invention." He advised Bell to gain more knowledge before publishing his ideas. Later, Henry served as a judge for electrical exhibits at the Centennial Exhibition.
