This group organized exhibitions and discussions at Alfter Castle to foster interdisciplinary research. Beuys eventually became a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, serving from 1961 until 1972. During this time, he influenced many students and developed his theories on social sculpture.
Beuys’s impact reached far beyond the walls of an art studio. He was a founding member and lifelong supporter of the German Green Party. He also helped create the Free International University for Creativity & Interdisciplinary Research (FIU). 
His artistic legacy is often compared to other major figures of the 20th century. For example, some biographers describe him as the "ideal antagonist" to the American artist Andy Warhol.
