His parents were Spanish. His father, Mariano Martí Navarro, was from Valencia. His mother, Leonor Pérez Cabrera, was from the Canary Islands. When Martí was four, his family moved to Spain. They returned to Cuba two years later. Martí attended public school in the Santa Clara neighborhood. During his youth, he developed a strong social conscience. He was influenced by his teacher, Mendive. He was also close to his friend, Fermín Valdés Domínguez. In 1865, Martí and other students mourned the death of Abraham Lincoln. They felt deep pain because Lincoln had helped end slavery in the United States. This event helped shape Martí's views on freedom.

As a teenager, Martí began to express his political ideas through writing. In 1869, he published his first political writings. He also wrote a patriotic drama called "Abdala." This play was about a fictional country named Nubia. It described a struggle for liberation. At age 16, Martí faced great hardship. The Spanish government arrested him for treason and bribery. They found a letter he had written to a friend. Martí was sentenced to six years in prison. He became very ill while in jail. The chains used to bind him injured his legs. Eventually, the authorities moved him to Isla de Pinos. Later, they decided to exile him to Spain.
