He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1934. Later, he attended the New York University School of Medicine. During medical school, he discovered a passion for biochemistry and bacteriology. He also spent time in the laboratory of Thomas Francis. Francis had previously discovered the type B influenza virus. This experience introduced Salk to the field of virology. It was here that he became truly hooked on virus research.
When the vaccine's success was announced on April 12, 1955, the impact was immediate. Salk was hailed by the public as a "miracle worker." 
One of the most notable aspects of Salk's career was his ethics. He chose not to patent the vaccine. He did not seek to make a profit from his discovery. He wanted to maximize the global distribution of the medicine. The University of Pittsburgh and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis considered patenting it. However, a patent attorney noted that any potential novelty was extremely narrow. This decision ensured that the vaccine remained accessible to as many people as possible. Salk believed that universal vaccination was a "moral commitment" to children.
Salk's legacy continues through the institutions he built. In 1963, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
