He also worked on "talking pictures" by using thallium sulfide. This chemical helped him create the first live-animated images using reflected light. Baird achieved several major milestones in the late 1920s. In July 1928, he demonstrated the first color television transmission. He used scanning discs at both the transmitting and receiving ends. Additionally, the BBC found the Baird system difficult to use for mobile broadcasting. The cameras required heavy developer tanks, hoses, and cables. Eventually, fully electronic systems like the Emitron camera tube replaced mechanical methods. These new systems were more efficient and easier to move around.

Baird's legacy is recognized by many scientific and engineering institutions. In 2006, the National Library of Scotland named him one of the ten greatest Scottish scientists. In 2015, he was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.

His impact is even visible in public honors, such as a bronze plaque in London. In 2021, the Royal Mint released a 50p coin to mark the 75th anniversary of his death.
