Comenius developed several innovative educational concepts. He believed in universal education, which means learning should be for everyone. This included equal opportunities for impoverished children and education for women. He promoted lifelong learning rather than simple, dull memorization. He wanted students to focus on logical thinking instead. His method emphasized gradual development. Students should move from simple concepts to more comprehensive ideas. Comenius was born in 1592 in the Margraviate of Moravia. This area is part of the modern Czech Republic. His exact birthplace is uncertain. It might have been Uherský Brod, Nivnice, or Komňa. His surname comes from the village of Komňa. His early life was marked by great loss. His father, Martin, and his mother, Anna, both died when John was young. He grew up in impoverished circumstances. This meant he could not start formal education until his late teens.

His life was shaped by religious conflict and war. In 1621, he lost all his property and writings due to religious wars. In 1627, the Habsburg Counter-Reformation forced him and the Brethren into exile. He found refuge in many places, including Leszno in Poland. In 1638, the Swedish government asked him to help reorganize their schools. He worked with Queen Christina and Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. Later, he lived in Transylvania and England. He was even offered the presidency of Harvard University. However, he chose not to take that position.

Comenius also worked on a large project called pansophism. This was a movement to organize all human knowledge. He wanted to make all knowledge accessible to every child. He wrote Pansophiae Prodromus in 1639 to help explain these ideas. He believed knowledge was born from nature, and nature came from God. He even tried to design a language where false statements could not be expressed. This work was very visionary and complex.

He fled to Amsterdam in the Netherlands to find safety. He lived there until he died in 1670. He is buried in Naarden, where a mausoleum stands today.
