Hevelius lived during a very important time for science. He was the first Pole to join the Royal Society in London in 1664. He also received support from four different kings of Poland. One king, John III Sobieski, even helped him by letting him sell his beer freely. In 1679, the young English scientist Edmond Halley came to visit him. Hevelius was a respected member of the global scientific community.

In 1679, a terrible fire destroyed his observatory and many of his books. Even after this hard job, he worked quickly to repair his tools. He died on his 76th birthday in 1687. He was buried in St. Catherine's Church in his home city.

He served as a town councillor and the chairman of the city council for the Old Town. Beyond politics, he was a wealthy merchant involved in the brewing industry. He brewed a famous beer known as Jopen. This business helped fund his scientific passions. He was also a member of the beer-brewing guild, which he led starting in 1643.

In 1641, he constructed a private observatory on the roofs of his three connected houses. He called this observatory the Sternenburg, or "Star Castle." To study the heavens, he used many different instruments. He even built a large Keplerian telescope himself. This telescope featured a tube made of wood and wire. At the time, it was likely one of the longest tubed telescopes ever made. However, Hevelius was unique because he often performed major work without using a telescope at all. He relied on tools like the quadrant and the alidade to make precise measurements.

His scientific contributions changed how we see the sky.

He spent four years carefully charting the surface of the Moon. He published these findings in his 1647 work, *Selenographia, sive Lunae descriptio*. Because of this detailed mapping, he is known as the "founder of lunar topography." He also discovered four different comets in 1652, 1661, 1672, and 1677. He proposed that these bodies travel around the Sun in parabolic paths. Additionally, he identified the periodic variable star Omicron Ceti and gave it the name "Mira," which means "the Wonderful."

Hevelius was also a prolific creator of star maps and constellations.

He described ten new constellations in his work. Seven of these patterns are still recognized by astronomers today. These include Canes Venatici, Lacerta, Leo Minor, Lynx, Scutum, Sextans, and Vulpecula. He created the constellation Scutum, or "Sobieski's Shield," to honor the Polish King John III Sobieski. He also published a massive star atlas called *Firmamentum Sobiescianum*. He printed this atlas at his own expense and even engraved many of the printing plates himself.

Hevelius was a highly respected figure in the international scientific community. In 1664, he became the first Pole to be inducted into the Royal Society in London. He was also considered one of the first German fellows of the society. His work earned him the patronage of four consecutive Polish kings. King John III Sobieski was a frequent visitor to his observatory. The King even helped Hevelius by allowing his beer to be sold freely outside city limits. This support helped Hevelius maintain his dual life as a brewer and a scientist.

His scientific journey was also a family endeavor. After his first wife, Katharine, died in 1662, he married Elisabeth Koopmann. Elisabeth was a talented astronomer who supported his work. After his death, she published two of his scientific works. Because of her contributions, she is often considered the first female astronomer. However, Hevelius faced great hardship in 1679. A massive fire destroyed his observatory, his instruments, and many of his books. Despite this loss, he worked quickly to repair his equipment. He was even able to observe the great comet of 1680 shortly after the disaster.

Hevelius died on his 76th birthday, on 28 January 1687.

He was buried in St. Catherine's Church in Gdańsk. His legacy lives on through the stars he named and the maps he drew. There is a crater on the Moon named Hevelius, as well as an asteroid. His life demonstrates how curiosity can thrive even amidst the responsibilities of city leadership and business.
