Because of his work for the people, João Goulart became the president of Brazil in 1961.

João Belchior Marques Goulart, widely known by his nickname Jango, was a central figure in 20th-century Brazilian politics. He served as the 24th president of Brazil from 1961 until 1964. His presidency represented a specific political era in the country. He was considered the last left-wing president of Brazil for many decades. This status remained until Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2003. His life moved from the rural ranches of southern Brazil to the highest office in the nation.

Goulart was born on March 1, 1919, at Yguariaçá Farm in Rio Grande do Sul.

His father, Vicente Rodrigues Goulart, was an estancieiro, which is a rancher who owns large rural properties. His mother, Vicentina Marques Goulart, was a housewife. The family had roots in the Azores, an archipelago belonging to Portugal. Goulart's early life was marked by both privilege and personal hardship. He grew up with six sisters, though two of his younger brothers died young. He also faced a serious health challenge during his youth. He contracted syphilis, which caused near-total paralysis in his left knee. This condition required expensive surgery in São Paulo. Although he struggled with the disability, he showed resilience by participating in Carnival parades to make light of his walking difficulties.

Before entering politics, Goulart established himself as a very successful businessman. Between 1941 and 1945, he built a significant fortune through the cattle industry. He used his cattle as collateral to secure loans from several major banks. By 1946, his wealth in cattle was valued at approximately US$506,630. Despite his high economic status, he maintained a reputation for being a kind and humble man. He was known for refusing to participate in social discrimination. He treated his employees with respect and was often willing to help those in need personally. This combination of wealth and empathy helped him build a strong foundation for his future public life.

Goulart's political career was deeply connected to President Getúlio Vargas.

After his father died in 1943, Goulart inherited large rural properties. This inheritance made him one of the most influential ranchers in his region. He was eventually invited to join the Brazilian Labour Party, known as the PTB. He rose quickly through the party, serving as its local, state, and eventually national president. In 1947, he was elected to the state assembly with 4,150 votes. By 1950, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, receiving 39,832 votes. These victories showed his growing influence among the Brazilian electorate.

In 1953, Goulart was appointed as the Minister of Labour by President Vargas.

This role placed him at the center of intense national conflict. The country was facing a deep crisis involving worker strikes and opposition from the National Democratic Union (UDN). Goulart focused on social security and the rights of the working class. He signed decrees to help with housing financing and retirement pensions. His most controversial move was advocating for a 100% increase in the minimum wage. This would have raised the wage from ₢$1,200 to ₢$2,400. While workers supported this, many business owners and military leaders strongly opposed it. The tension eventually led to his resignation in February 1954.

Goulart's political journey continued as he moved toward the presidency.

He served as the Vice President under Juscelino Kubitschek. When he finally became president in 1961, he faced a very divided nation. His leadership style and political goals created significant friction with conservative sectors. These tensions culminated in 1964 when a military coup d'état occurred. The military removed him from power, ending his presidency and his era of left-wing leadership. His time in office remains a major subject of study regarding Brazilian democracy and social reform.

The legacy of João Goulart is tied to the struggle for social and economic rights in Brazil.

His actions as Minister of Labour and President highlighted the deep divides between different social classes. He sought to balance the needs of the working class with the existing capitalist system. He argued against what he called "parasitic" capitalism while supporting productive investment. His life reflects the complex transition of Brazil from a rural, ranching-based society to a modern industrial nation. Even after his removal from office, his influence on Brazilian political thought remained significant for decades.
