His life and missions have left a lasting impact on culture and science. Lovell co-wrote the book *Lost Moon* in 1994. This book served as the basis for the 1995 film *Apollo 13*. He even appeared in the film in a cameo role. For his service, he received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Lovell lived a long life, passing away in 2025 at the age of 97.
