Another major part of Tull's system was the use of the horse-drawn hoe. He believed that frequent hoeing was essential for healthy crops. He argued that hoeing did more than just destroy weeds. It also served to pulverize the soil, which means breaking it into very fine particles. By stirring the earth, Tull believed that gases and moisture from the atmosphere could penetrate more easily to the plant roots. He even developed a specific turnip-drill. This was a lighter machine designed so that one half of the seed would spring up sooner than the other. This helped the crop escape damage from the turnip fly.
Tull’s theories on soil were quite unique. He believed that soil was the sole food for plants. He famously argued that manuring, or adding animal waste to soil, was an unnecessary operation. Instead, he believed that the growth of a plant was simply the addition of more earth. He described the "pasturage of plants" as the internal surfaces of the pores and cavities within the soil. He thought that roots took in fine particles of earth from these tiny spaces. While his supporters, such as Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau, initially found success with this, they later discovered that pulverizing soil alone could not replace the need for nutrients indefinitely.
Jethro Tull's life involved many different roles and locations. He was born around 1674 and studied at St John's College, Oxford. Although he trained for the legal profession and was called to the bar in 1693, he eventually turned to farming. During a trip to Europe to seek a cure for a pulmonary disorder, he studied agriculture in France and Italy. He eventually settled on his father's farm at Howberry and later managed Prosperous Farm in Shalbourne. He wrote his influential book, *Horse-hoeing Husbandry*, in 1731. He died in 1741 at Prosperous Farm. 
The legacy of Tull's "new husbandry" is seen in modern agricultural systems. His method of planting in rows with wide intervals allowed for constant hoeing. This system was even used to influence cotton culture in the American Southern Colonies. While his methods faced resistance from laborers who feared for their jobs, they eventually became a standard practice. His work bridged the gap between traditional manual farming and the mechanical, scientific agriculture we use today. Even his name lives on in culture, serving as the inspiration for a famous progressive rock band in the 1970s.
