The city operates as a massive gateway for millions of people. It serves as the principal entry point to Mecca Sharif, the holiest city in Islam, located to the east. Medina, the second-holiest city, lies to the north. Because of this, Jeddah has historically been a hub for Muslim travelers performing the Hajj pilgrimage. The city's economic power is driven by the Jeddah Islamic Port. This facility is the thirty-sixth largest seaport in the world. Within the Middle East, it ranks as the second-largest and second-busiest seaport, trailing only Dubai's Port of Jebel Ali.

Jeddah's history is layered with many different eras and cultures. Some believe the area has been settled for more than 2,500 years. Excavations in nearby valleys have revealed ancient Thamudic inscriptions. It is thought the city may have begun as a fishing hamlet settled by the Yemeni Quda'a tribe. In 647 AD, the third Muslim Caliph, Uthman Ibn Affan, transformed the city into a major travel hub. This move made Jeddah the official port for Makkah. Over the centuries, the city saw the rule of several empires. These included the Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Fatimids, the Ayyubids, and the Mamluks.

Defending the city became a priority during the era of the Ottoman Empire. In the early 1500s, the city faced threats from Portuguese explorers. For example, the Portuguese attacked the port in 1517. To protect the inhabitants, the Ottoman Turks rebuilt the city's walls in 1525. These stone walls included six watchtowers and six city gates. The Gate of Mecca faced east, while the Gate of Al-Magharibah faced the port to the west. Other gates included the Gate of Sharif, the Gate of Al-Bunt, the Gate of Al-Sham, and the Gate of Medina.

By the 19th century, the city's layout and defenses changed again. The original seven gates were minimized into four giant gates. These included the Gate of Sham to the north and the Gate of Mecca to the east. The Gate of Sharif faced south, and the Gate of Al-Magharibah remained on the seaside.

Even today, visitors can find surviving parts of the old city walls. The city also has a unique culinary identity due to its location. Unlike other parts of Saudi Arabia, the food culture in Jeddah is dominated by fishing and seafood. This local distinction is reflected in the city motto, "Jeddah Ghair," which means "Jeddah is different."

Modern Jeddah is a center for rapid growth and innovation. As of 2022, the city has a population of approximately 3,751,722 people. This makes it the largest city in the Hejaz and the ninth-largest in the Middle East. The city is currently focusing on capital investment in scientific and engineering leadership. This goal aims to position Jeddah as a leader within the Middle East. In 2009, the city was ranked fourth in the Africa, Middle East, and 'stan countries region on the Innovation Cities Index.
