A falling body can even be understood as gradually accumulating units of impetus as it accelerates. This explains why resistance and weight can either add to or detract from an object's speed.
Details regarding Buridan's early life remain somewhat uncertain. He was likely born before 1301, possibly near Béthune in Picardy, France. He received his education in Paris at the Collège du Cardinal Lemoine. By the mid-1320s, he had earned his Master of Arts degree and a license to teach. Unlike many of his peers, he remained a secular cleric rather than joining a religious order. He also chose to stay in the faculty of arts instead of pursuing degrees in law, medicine, or theology. Some scholars suggest he preferred philosophy as a secular enterprise based on sense and intellect.
Buridan's legacy is marked by both scientific influence and famous legends. Historians like Pierre Duhem and Anneliese Maier saw him as a key figure in the decline of Aristotelian cosmology. Duhem even described him as a forerunner of the scientist Galileo. However, other scholars note that Buridan remained a committed Aristotelian regarding the finiteness of the universe. His name is also linked to a thought experiment called "Buridan's ass." Interestingly, researchers have found no trace of this parable in his surviving writings. Many other stories about his life are apocryphal and cannot be confirmed by historical records.
Through his logical and physical studies, Buridan changed how thinkers approached the natural world. He moved the conversation toward measurable properties like speed and quantity of matter. His work helped transition science from purely philosophical speculation toward more mechanical explanations.
