Some people thought this was wrong, but it helped her understand their personalities. She also studied the harder sides of chimpanzee life. She saw that they could be violent and engage in organized warfare. She even watched them hunt other primates, like colobus monkeys. These facts showed that chimpanzees have a complex nature, just like humans.

Today, Jane spends her time protecting the planet. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to help wildlife. She also started a group called Roots & Shoots in 1991. This program helps young people in over 100 countries. She works to save forests and protect animals from harm. She is widely considered the preeminent expert on chimpanzees. For more than sixty years, she conducted field research on the social and family lives of wild chimpanzees. Most of her work focused on the Kasakela chimpanzee community. This community lives in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. Her studies changed the scientific understanding of what it means to be human. She proved that chimpanzees share many deep traits with people.

Goodall's research involved observing chimpanzee behavior in their natural habitat. She looked for evidence of intelligence, social structures, and emotional depth. One major discovery involved tool use. She watched a chimpanzee use stalks of grass to fish for termites in mounds. The chimpanzee even stripped leaves off the twigs to make them more effective. This process of object modification showed the beginnings of toolmaking. Before this, many scientists believed only humans could create and use tools. This finding forced scientists to redefine the term "tool" and the definition of humanity.

Beyond tools, Goodall discovered that chimpanzees possess complex emotions and personalities. She observed behaviors such as hugs, kisses, and pats on the back. These gestures are evidence of close, supportive, and affectionate social bonds. She noted that these bonds can last for more than 50 years. Goodall also observed the darker sides of chimpanzee nature. She documented instances of aggression, organized warfare, and even cannibalism. She watched chimpanzees systematically hunt and eat smaller primates, such as colobus monkeys. In fact, chimpanzees at Gombe kill and eat about one-third of the local colobus population every year.

Goodall's scientific journey began with a unique childhood connection to animals. As a child in London, her father gave her a stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee. This toy sparked her early love for animals. In 1957, she worked as a secretary in Kenya. While there, she contacted the palaeontologist Louis Leakey. Leakey was searching for a researcher to study great apes to understand early hominids. He hired Goodall and sent her to Gombe Stream National Park in July 1960.

At the time, primatology was a field dominated by men. Goodall faced many challenges as a woman in science. However, she achieved great academic success despite these obstacles. In 1962, Louis Leakey arranged for her to study at the University of Cambridge. She was only the eighth person allowed to study for a PhD there without a prior bachelor's degree. She earned her PhD in ethology, the study of animal behavior, in 1965.

Her thesis focused on the behavior of free-living chimpanzees. She also broke scientific convention by naming the animals she studied. Instead of using numbers, she used names like David Greybeard, Goliath, and Flo. This allowed her to study individual personalities, even though some critics accused her of anthropomorphism.

Goodall has dedicated much of her life to wildlife conservation and activism. In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. The JGI now has nineteen offices around the world. In 1991, she started the Roots & Shoots youth program. This program began with 12 teenagers in Tanzania and has grown into a global network. Today, it includes over 10,000 groups in more than 100 countries. She also founded the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre in the Republic of Congo to care for orphaned chimpanzees.

Her contributions to science and society have earned her many prestigious honors. She was appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2002. In 2003, Queen Elizabeth II named her a dame commander of the Order of the British Empire. She has received the Hubbard Medal from the National Geographic Society and the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom. Throughout her career, she has written 32 books, including 15 written for children. She remains an active lecturer, traveling to promote climate action and conservation efforts worldwide.
