He chose astronomy because his teacher, Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn, was very inspiring. In 1922, he even went to the United States to study at Yale. He later returned to the Netherlands to work at Leiden University.

He made many big discoveries during his long career. In 1932, he wrote that there must be invisible matter in space. A scientist named Fritz Zwicky later called this dark matter. Today, we think dark matter makes up about 84.5% of the universe. Oort also found the galactic halo, which is a group of stars outside the main disk.
