He worked to lower taxes through the Walker tariff of 1846. He also set up the Independent Treasury system. However, his choices caused new arguments between different states. These arguments were about the use of slave labor. Polk owned a plantation in Mississippi and used slaves. This helped lead to much division in the country. He left office in 1849 and died in Tennessee soon after.

He was born on November 2, 1795, in Pineville, North Carolina. He was the first of 10 children in a farming family. His father, Samuel Polk, was a farmer and a surveyor. The family moved to Maury County, Tennessee, in 1806. As a child, James suffered from urinary stones. He underwent surgery in Kentucky to remove them. At that time, doctors used brandy as an anesthetic.

He recovered and later studied at the University of North Carolina. He graduated with honors in May 1818.

After college, Polk moved to Nashville to study law. He studied under the attorney Felix Grundy. Polk became a successful lawyer in Maury County. His legal work helped pay for his political career. He entered politics in the Tennessee state legislature in 1823. He was known as the "Napoleon of the Stump" because of his great speaking skills.

In 1825, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He eventually became Speaker of the House in 1835. Polk is the only person to serve as both Speaker and president. He also served as the governor of Tennessee starting in 1839.

Polk entered the presidency as a "dark-horse" candidate.

This means he was an unexpected choice. In the 1844 election, he was a compromise candidate for the Democratic Party. He narrowly defeated Henry Clay of the Whig Party. Polk had promised to serve only one term. During his term, he worked on several major economic and territorial goals. He passed the Walker tariff of 1846 to reduce tax rates. He also reestablished the Independent Treasury system.

His policies regarding expansion increased tensions between different parts of the country. These tensions were about whether new territories would allow slavery. Polk was a property owner who used slave labor. He kept a plantation in Mississippi and increased his slave ownership. This helped worsen the divide between free states and slave states. Many historians believe these divisions helped set the stage for the Civil War.

Polk kept his promise to leave office after four years. He returned to Tennessee in 1849. He died of cholera shortly after his term ended.
