Jaimini was a very important scholar from ancient India. He lived a long time ago. Some experts believe he lived around the 4th century BCE. Others think he lived between 250 BCE and 50 CE. He was the son of a man named Parashara. Jaimini studied under a great teacher named Vyasa. He was also a student of Badarayana. Badarayana was the person who started the Vedanta school of thought.

Jaimini started his own school called Mimamsa. This is one of the six major schools of Indian philosophy. His school is known as Purva Mimamsa. It focuses on dharma, which means religious duty. It also looks at rituals found in the Vedas. These are very old and sacred texts. His main book is called the Purva Mimamsa Sutras. This book contains about 3,000 small rules called sutras.

His way of thinking was different from his teacher. Badarayana focused on knowledge of the self. Jaimini focused on the importance of rituals. They even quoted each other in their work. Sometimes they agreed with each other. Other times they had different ideas. Jaimini's work helped people understand how to study texts. Many scholars later wrote reviews of his books. These scholars included people named Shabara, Kumarila, and Prabhakara.

Jaimini also wrote his own version of a famous story. This story is called the Jaimini Bharata. It is a version of the Mahabharata. It is different from the version by Vyasa. His version focuses on peace between enemies. It also talks about worshipping Krishna. Only parts of his work are still available today. These parts are called the Ashvamedhika Parva and the Shasramukhacaritam.

There is a special story about how Jaimini learned. He was once confused about the stories he heard. He went to find a sage named Markandeya for help. But Markandeya could not speak at that time. Jaimini was a highly influential scholar from ancient India. He is most famous for founding the Mīmāṃsā school of Hindu philosophy. This school is one of the six major Darsanas, or philosophical systems, in India. Jaimini lived many centuries ago. Some scholars estimate his life was around the 4th century BCE. Other researchers place his time between 250 BCE and 50 CE. He was the son of Parāśara and studied under the sage Vyasa.

Jaimini's philosophy emerged during a time of great intellectual change. At that time, traditional Vedic beliefs were losing some of their persuasive power. People began to question if sacrifices truly pleased the gods or maintained the universe. New perspectives from Buddhist, Jain, and skeptical thinkers challenged the importance of Vedic rituals. Some people still practiced these rituals even while they felt these doubts. Jaimini wrote his works to address these specific criticisms and defend the traditions.

His most important work is the Purva Mimamsa Sutras. This text is also known as Karma-mimamsa, which means the "Study of Ritual Action." It serves as the foundational text for the Purva-Mimamsa school. The work contains approximately 3,000 sutras, which are short, rule-like statements. These sutras focus on the exegesis of the Vedas. Exegesis is the critical explanation or interpretation of a text. Jaimini used this method to study ritual practice, known as karma, and religious duty, known as dharma.

Jaimini's approach was very different from his teacher, Badarayana. Badarayana founded the Vedanta school of philosophy. While Badarayana emphasized metaphysical knowledge of the Self (Atman) and Brahman, Jaimini emphasized ritualism. This is often called karma-kanda. Despite these differences, the two scholars remained connected. They frequently quoted one another while analyzing their different theories. They sometimes agreed, but they often presented antithesis, or opposing ideas, to one another.

Jaimini's influence extended far beyond his own lifetime through his students and commentators. His methods for textual analysis helped shape many other Indian philosophical schools. Several important scholars wrote bhashyas, which are detailed reviews or commentaries, on his texts. Among the most famous of these commentators were Shabara, Kumarila, and Prabhakara. These scholars helped preserve and expand upon the ideas found in the Mimamsa Sutras.

Beyond philosophy, Jaimini is credited with writing a version of the Mahabharata called the Jaimini Bharata. This version was narrated to him by his teacher, Vyasa. It differs from Vyasa's version because it focuses on the Ashwamedha of Yudhishthira. It also emphasizes the reconstruction of peace between the children of enemies, such as Karna, Jayadratha, and Shakuni. This version highlights the value of worshipping Krishna as an avatar of Vishnu. Today, only two parts remain: the Ashvamedhika Parva and the Shasramukhacaritam.

There is a unique story in the texts regarding how Jaimini gained knowledge. After hearing the Mahabharata from Vyasa, Jaimini felt confused by the details. He sought out the sage Markandeya for help, but Markandeya had abandoned speech. Instead, Jaimini was directed to four birds that had witnessed the eighteen-day war. These birds had been protected by an elephant's bell during the conflict. Because they had witnessed the events so closely, they possessed a rare knowledge and the gift of human speech. Jaimini spoke with them to clear his many doubts.

Jaimini's presence is also noted in various parts of the traditional Mahabharata. For example, the Adi Parva states he was present during the sarpasatra, a sacrificial ritual. The Sabha Parva mentions he was a member of Yudhishthira's council. Finally, the Shanti Parva describes him visiting Bhishma while the latter lay on a bed of arrows. Through his many writings and his role in these traditions, Jaimini remains a central figure in Indian history.
