For thirteen years, he was perhaps the most famous African American on Earth.

Johnson’s rise to fame began with a series of difficult jobs. He was the eldest son of Henry and Tina Johnson. Both of his parents had been formerly enslaved. To help his family, Johnson worked as a janitor and a porter. He also worked as a stableboy and a longshoreman. While apprenticing as a carriage painter in Dallas, he discovered boxing. He eventually saved enough money to purchase his own boxing gloves. His first significant match took place on a beach in 1895. He defeated John Lee and won a $1.50 prize.

Professional boxing taught Johnson how to master the art of defense. In 1901, he lost a match to Joe Choynski in Galveston. However, Choynski became an essential mentor to the young fighter. Choynski taught him how to move skillfully to avoid being hit. He famously told Johnson that a moving fighter should never take a punch. This training helped Johnson win the World Colored Heavyweight Championship in 1903. He defended this title four times over the next two years. He also engaged in many frequent matches against other top fighters like Joe Jeanette and Sam Langford.

Johnson’s journey to the world title required immense persistence. In 1904, he challenged the reigning champion, James J. Jeffries. Jeffries refused to fight a Black man and retired instead. Johnson then defeated Bob Fitzsimmons by knockout in 1907. On December 26, 1908, he finally secured the world heavyweight title. He traveled to Australia to fight the Canadian champion, Tommy Burns. The match took place at the Sydney Stadium before 20,000 spectators. Johnson won the title in the 14th round.

His championship victory caused massive social upheaval across the United States. Many white Americans believed the heavyweight champion should represent white superiority. They viewed Johnson’s dominance as a threat to their social views. This tension led to the famous 1910 match against James J. Jeffries. This bout was called the "fight of the century." Jeffries had come out of retirement specifically to defeat Johnson. Johnson won the fight, which triggered dozens of race riots across the country. The victory was a major moment in the history of racial tension in America.

Johnson lived a life that was intentionally flamboyant and bold. He drove flashy yellow sports cars and wore gold teeth. He even walked a pet leopard while drinking champagne. In 1912, he opened a successful "black and tan" restaurant and nightclub in Chicago. This was a desegregated establishment that he ran with his wife. However, his lifestyle and interracial relationships led to legal trouble. He was arrested under the federal Mann Act. This law forbade transporting women across state lines for "immoral purposes." The charge was widely seen as racially motivated.

Despite these legal battles, Johnson remained a successful businessman. He fled the country for seven years to avoid prison. During this time, he fought many boxing matches abroad. He eventually returned to serve his sentence at the Leavenworth federal penitentiary. Even after prison, he continued to earn money through fights and endorsement deals. He died in a car crash in 1946 at age 68. In 2018, President Donald Trump granted him a posthumous pardon. His life remains a complex study of skill, fame, and social struggle.
