Jabalpur holds a unique place in the history of paleontology. In 1828, British officer William Henry Sleeman discovered dinosaur fossils near Bara Simla Hill. This event marked the first dinosaur fossil discovery in all of Asia. Since then, researchers have found more evidence of ancient life in the area. These finds include dinosaur eggshells and fossils from species like Titanosaurus and Rajasaurus. In 1917, Charles Alfred Matley discovered a noasaurid theropod dinosaur named Laevisuchus indicus. Later, in 1932, the species Jubbulpuria tenuis was described.

The history of the region spans many ancient empires and dynasties. Early relics from the Mauryan Empire date back to 300 BCE. The area later saw rule from the Satavahana dynasty and the Gupta Empire. The Kalachuri Dynasty conquered the region in 875 CE. Later, the Gond kings of Garha-Mandla established a significant center of power. One notable ruler was Rani Durgavati, who was a princess of the Chandela Dynasty.

She was famous for water conservation and built over 85 ponds in the region. Eventually, the Maratha Empire and then the British East India Company took control. During British rule, the city was known by the spelling Jubbulpore.

In the 20th century, Jabalpur became a site for major political shifts. The Tripuri Congress session took place in 1939 at Tilwaraghat. This session was a turning point for the Indian national movement. Subhash Chandra Bose was re-elected as president during this meeting. He defeated Pattabhi Sitaramayya, who was the candidate supported by Mahatma Gandhi. This election highlighted deep ideological divisions within the Congress party. Bose favored a more assertive strategy for independence. This conflict eventually led to his resignation in April 1939. The Kamania Gate was built to commemorate these historic events.

The city is also a massive center for military activity in India. The Jabalpur Cantonment is one of the largest cantonments in the country. It hosts the army headquarters for five different states. These states include Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar, and Jharkhand. The city also contains several specialized military installations. These include the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles Regimental Centre and various ordnance factories. One local industry includes the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, which produces trucks for the army.

Today, the economy of the Jabalpur district relies heavily on agriculture and industry. The Narmada River provides freshwater from the Vindhya Range. This creates fertile alluvial soil in the Narmada basin. Farmers grow essential crops like wheat, rice, sorghum, and millet. They also produce commercial crops like cotton and sugarcane. The city itself is a large urban center with over one million residents. Most people in the city speak Hindi. The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation manages the city's infrastructure and services.
