In Venice, he visited the San Lazzaro degli Armeni congregation. There, he studied Armenian manuscripts and art. He also met the famous Russian novelist Nikolai Gogol.

He spent time in Florence, Naples, and Rome. Italian art and museums acted as a "second academy" for him. During this time, he received a golden medal from Pope Gregory XVI. He also represented Russia at an international exhibition at the Louvre in France.

Upon returning to Russia, his professional status rose quickly. He was named an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He also became the official artist of the Russian Navy.
