The intense pressure and heat from this collision created underwater volcanoes. As these volcanoes grew, they formed chains of islands. Over millions of years, massive amounts of sediment filled the gaps between these islands. Eventually, these deposits created a continuous land bridge.

Scientists debate exactly when this closure was completed. Some research suggests the isthmus formed around 3 million years ago (Ma).
