Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone. This backbone is also called a vertebral column. Most animals on Earth belong to this huge group. In fact, about 97% of all animal species are invertebrates. They can be very tiny or very large. Some are only 10 micrometers long. Others are huge, like the colossal squid which grows up to 10 meters.

These animals have many different ways to build their bodies. Some use a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. This works like a suit of armor for insects and crabs. Other animals use a hydrostatic skeleton. This is a body filled with fluid to help them keep their shape. Jellyfish and worms use this method to move.

Scientists use the word invertebrate to group these many different animals. The word comes from Latin and means "not" a joint. It is a term of convenience for people to use. It is not a single official group in science. Instead, it includes many different groups like arthropods and molluscs. This includes everything from sponges to spiders.

There are many different types of invertebrates to find. Insects are the biggest group with about 1,000,000 known species. Arachnids, like spiders, have about 102,248 species. Invertebrates do many things that you might recognize. Most reproduce by using special cells to make new babies. Some can even make copies of themselves without a partner. Many also live in social groups like ants or bees. They use their senses to feel things like heat or touch. Some insects even use tiny tubes called tracheae to breathe.

Molluscs include diverse animals like gastropods, bivalves, and cephalopods. Echinoderms, such as starfish, are exclusively marine and exhibit radial symmetry. Annelids are segmented worms, while Cnidarians include jellyfish and corals. Each of these groups represents a different way of organizing life and interacting with the environment.

Taxonomically, the term "invertebrate" is not used the same way as a formal group like Arthropoda. In professional biology, other attributes are often more important for classification. For example, scientists might look at embryological development or body symmetry to build a cladogram. Some animals, like the Tunicata and Cephalochordata, are actually more closely related to vertebrates than to other invertebrates. This relationship is why the term is considered a convenience rather than a strictly scientific category.

The sheer scale of invertebrate diversity is staggering compared to vertebrates. One estimate suggests that 97% of all animal species are invertebrates. Of the species described by scientists, over 95% are invertebrates, while only about 66,178 vertebrate species have been described. Insects alone represent a massive portion of this diversity, with approximately 1,000,000 described species. Arachnids follow with 102,248 species, and gastropods include about 85,000 species.

Invertebrates also exhibit a wide range of physical sizes and biological functions. They can range from tiny myxozoans measuring only 10 micrometers to the colossal squid, which can reach 9 or 10 meters in length. Their respiratory systems vary significantly; for instance, many terrestrial arthropods use an open respiratory system. This system uses spiracles, which are small openings, and tracheae, which are branching tubes, to transport gases. In some insects, like bees, air sacs can be actively pumped to control airflow.

Biological processes like reproduction and social behavior also show immense variety. Most invertebrates reproduce sexually through meiosis, but some, like certain orbatid mites, can reproduce asexually. Some species have maintained asexual reproduction for more than 400 million years. Many invertebrates also exhibit complex social behaviors, such as ants, bees, and termites. These animals can also process sensory information; for example, neurons in molluscs can detect changes in pressure or tissue trauma.
