Modern technology has also introduced remote collaboration through telemedicine. Some hospitals use teleconferencing systems to create what is known as a virtual ICU or eICU. 
Operating an ICU is a massive logistical and financial undertaking. In the United States, intensive care beds can account for up to 20% of all hospital beds. In contrast, the United Kingdom uses them for only about 2% of total beds, as they admit only the most severely ill. These services are also very expensive to provide. In the United States, hospital stays involving ICU services can cost 2.5 times more than other stays. In the United Kingdom, the daily costs vary by the type of unit. For example, an adult ICU cost approximately £1,328 per bed per day in 2003–04. A neonatal unit cost £838, while a pediatric unit cost £1,702 per bed per day.
