A third generation of technology used integral film. This is the type of film used in the famous SX-70 models. In integral film, every necessary component is contained within the film itself. This includes the negative, the developer, and the fixer.

This design made the process much more efficient. It also removed much of the responsibility from the user. Each exposure develops automatically once the shutter is triggered. This specific technology was a major goal for the inventor Edwin Land.

Edwin Land is the figure credited with inventing commercially viable instant cameras. He unveiled instant film in New York City in 1947. One year later, in 1948, he introduced the Model 95 Land Camera.

This was widely considered the first commercial instant camera. Land's work led to many different generations of film. He later developed the SX-70, which utilized highly efficient print technology. This advancement allowed for even faster and easier image development.

Polaroid produced many different series of cameras and film over the decades. The 600 series, such as the Sun 600, used film that was four times faster than SX-70 film.

Polaroid also experimented with different formats. The Spectra series used a rectangular format. The i-Zone cameras used a very small format that could even be a sticker. These used an integral film that was similar to, but incompatible with, Polaroid's SX-70 film. Kodak's film was unique because the negative was exposed from the rear. This meant the dyes diffused to the front without needing a mirror to reverse the image. Fujifilm also became a major player with its Fotorama and Instax lines. Fujifilm introduced various models, including the Instax Mini 8 and the Instax Mini 90.

The industry faced significant changes in the early 21st century. In the first decade of the 2000s, analog film sales dropped by at least 25% per year. In February 2008, Polaroid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time. The company announced it would stop making instant film and cameras. This led to the shutdown of three manufacturing facilities and the loss of 450 jobs. However, the brand survived when it was acquired by PLR IP Holdings LLC in 2009. This group uses the Polaroid brand to market various digital and instant products.

Today, the interest in instant photography continues through new companies and brands. The Netherlands-based Impossible Project, now known as Polaroid Originals, began producing film for Polaroid cameras. They released the Impossible I-1 camera in 2016.

Other companies like Lomography have also contributed. Lomography raised over $1,000,000 on Kickstarter to create the Lomo'Instant camera.

Modern companies like MiNT Camera even build new electronics into vintage camera bodies. This allows enthusiasts to use classic designs with modern film like Fuji Instax. This connection between old and new keeps the history of instant photography alive.
