In deduction, he noted that if one term is contained within a middle term, and that middle term is contained within another, a perfect syllogism is formed. For example, if A applies to all B, and B applies to all C, then A must apply to all C. He also described induction as establishing a relation between an extreme term and a middle term through another extreme. His work on abduction suggested that we can move closer to knowledge by introducing intermediate terms.

Much later, the pragmatic philosophers refined these classical ideas. Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey studied inquiry as a way to address the nature of scientific reasoning. Peirce specifically extracted these ideas from classical logic and the work of Immanuel Kant. He helped show that abduction, deduction, and induction are not isolated tools. Instead, they are parts of a whole system where each part relies on the others. For instance, an abduction is only useful if it produces a guess that deduction can explain and induction can evaluate.

John Dewey offered a unique definition of this process. He described inquiry as the controlled transformation of an indeterminate situation. An indeterminate situation is one that is confusing or lacks clear connections. Through inquiry, this situation becomes determinate, meaning its parts are organized into a unified whole. Dewey and Peirce also recognized that inquiry is not just a private mental act. They saw it as a social process, a concept often called a "community of inquiry."

While inquiry is a powerful tool, some thinkers have discussed its potential limits. Charles Sanders Peirce argued that inquiry moves indefinitely toward a limit he called "truth." Other traditions suggest ethical or boundaries to what should be asked. For example, some Jewish rabbinical writers interpreted the text of Deuteronomy to suggest limits on inquiry. They reasoned that while one may ask about the days of creation, one should not inquire about what exists before creation or what lies beyond the universe. These different perspectives show the deep complexity of how humans approach the unknown.
